RIP Frederick Wiseman

RIP Frederick Wiseman (January 1, 1930 – February 16, 2026)

I have only seen a fraction of Frederick Wiseman’s films: Hospital (1970), Ex Libris: The New York Public Library (2017), Monrovia, Indiana (2018), A Couple (2022), Menus-Plaisirs Les Troisgros (2023). I’ve seen him speak at two post-screening discussions at the BFI (Hospital and Monrovia, Indiana). He was always sharp and clear about why he makes his films.

Ex Libris: The New York Public Library is the one I think of the most, a film about the civic duty of a library and many if its unsung heroes working in that institution who care for books and visitors. A documentation of care, kindness and generosity that moved me a lot.

“Frederick Wiseman’s film, EX LIBRIS – The New York Public Library, goes behind the scenes of one of the greatest knowledge institutions in the world and reveals it as a place of welcome, cultural exchange and learning.

With 92 locations throughout Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island, the library is committed to being a resource for all the inhabitants of this multifaceted and cosmopolitan city, and beyond. The New York Public Library exemplifies the deeply rooted American belief in the individual’s right to know and be informed.

It is one of the most democratic institutions in America – everyone is welcome. The Library strives to inspire learning, advance knowledge and strengthen communities.”

An interview with Frederick Wiseman talking about making Ex Libris: The New York Public Library and his relationship with the library.
