A few months ago, there was a call for submission from the Sharjah Art Foundation to submit photos for an upcoming exhibition titled Vantage Point Sharjah. The aim was to get photographers to explore Sharjah and produce works for the exhibition.
Vantage Point will open this week on Saturday, 7th September in Building GH, SAF Art Spaces, Al Mureijah, Heritage Area in Sharjah and will go on till Saturday, 7th December 2013.
Vantage Point Sharjah presents a broad selection of responses to the open call and includes work by professional photographers and artists as well as photographs taken by individuals with an active interest and passion for photography. The varied approaches to the landscape and life of Sharjah reflect the growing enthusiasm for photography as an artistic medium and offer viewers an opportunity to enjoy the work of local photographers.
This exhibition is one of Sharjah Art Foundation’s new initiatives focused on public programming and community outreach. We hope these initiatives will encourage people living and working in the UAE to participate in our activities and to become more engaged with the cultural life of the Emirates. (via sharjahart.org)
The opening night will include a film screening of Amal by Nujoom Alghanem.
Amal arrives to the United Arab Emirates full of dreams and with a secured one year working contract for a TV project. After the first year, she finds herself incapable of achieving the minimum of her plans. And in order to achieve her goals, she has to go through job after job and to surrender to the wheel of passing years.
She also realizes that regardless of her rich artistic life in her country, Syria, her work responsibilities in the UAE cause her to accept being in the margins of cultural and artistic life. This makes her appear as if she is forgotten. As she encounters these and other challenges, Amal reaches a conjunction where she must choose one of two options: to stay or to leave.
