Black Maria Film and Video Festival in Dubai

Black Maria Film and Video Festival is coming to Dubai on Thursday, 24th April at thejamjar. The festival has been running since 1981, and is "named after the world's first motion picture studio (Black Maria) built by Thomas Edison, where he made all of his own short experimental films".

The festival prmotes the art of the moving image and showcases short films.

The Festival has a long track record of commitment to short works. It encourages and seeks creative, insightful, sensitive, free spirited, expressive, poetic and experimental works in animation, narrative, documentary, and hybrid forms. All genres are welcome. The intent is to recognize, exhibit and reward uncommon work.

The Dubai edition is hosted by Scott Conard, Assistant Professor of New Media, College of Arts and Creative Enterprises in Zayed University, and will include work from a broad range of the independent film making community including graduate students and professional cinemaphotographers.

For the first time in the Gulf, viewers will experience this exclusive presentation, which will make them laugh and cry at beautiful ideas such as drawings synchronized with music to an animation of a monster on the road to happiness.

The works presented in this screening range from amazing efforts by a single filmmaker in the film “Strange Wonderful”, to the extraordinary efforts of 54 filmmakers from all seven continents in the film “Globe Trot”.  This screening showcases the broad depth of the independent film community.
