Art Nights at the Gate Village

A new monthly night (every last Wednesday of the month) called Art Night will launch this week the Gate Village in Dubai International Finance Centre.

The Gate Village is a great space with a selection of very good art galleries, boutiques, restaurants and cafes, so I'm glad to see this monthly social evening is happening, where the galleries will stay open till late alongside special events per month like movie screenings, live art and fashion shows. Here's a list of some of the events scheduled for this month:

Event Program - 27th January 2010

This evening The Farjam Collection @ DIFC unveils its third exhibition, From Matisse to Warhol: Works on Paper by Modern Masters. Featuring works never before seen by the public, the exhibition showcases many of the greatest artists of the 20th century, including Picasso, Chagall and Dali. The Farjam Collection @ DIFC showcases a rotating series of exhibitions drawn from the extensive private collection of Dr Farjam, which includes an extraordinary range of precious artworks, from early Islamic pieces to modern and contemporary works from around the world.

Villa Moda will be exclusively showcasing the entire Meher & Riddhima Spring/Summer 2010 collection.  The designers will be present to talk about their latest collection, and guests will be able to view the designs on live models and pre-order their favorite pieces.

The Universe of Keith Haring (82mins)

Directed by Christina Clausen, this film is an intimate portrait of world-renowned artist Keith Haring whose mantra was that "Art is for everyone!" The film is a thorough and intimate exploration of the background and career of one of the most popular and significant artists of the 20th century. It features interviews and archival footage of Fab 5 Freddy, Jeffrey Deitch, Kim Hastreiter, Grace Jones, Madonna, Yoko Ono, David LaChapelle, Kenny Scharf, Carlo McCormick, Andy Warhol, Ann Magnuson, Tony Shafrazi, and Junior Vasquez, among many others.

Live Art by UBIK

Dubai-based artist UBIK will be drawing live at Art Nights @ Gate Village.

UBIK was born in 1985. He grew up in Dubai and Kerala, and dropped out of fashion school in Delhi. While growing up, he wasn't one of those kids who drew a lot and neither did he have any creative tendencies. The core of UBIK's work deals with existentialism and absurdism, and the underlying cliches associated with it.

ARTSPACE - An exhibition of paintings by Hussein Madi

CUADRO  - A Survey of Turkish Contemporary Art

OPERA GALLERY - An exhibition of paintings by Lita Cabellut and Jean-Pierre Roc-Roussey

THE EMPTY QUARTER - Sacred Sights of India, an exhibition of rare vintage and contemporary photographic prints on India.
