Local - new exhibition at Traffic

Local is a new line of furniture, clothing and objects that aims to facilitate design in the United Arab Emirates, encouraging designers to produce their pieces here, using local materials and resources.

After a successful launch at the Zona Tortuna fair in Milan during Design Week 2010, the launch collection can be seen at Traffic between 11th and 17th May 2010.

I like this attitude of think global, act local and happy to see there is pride in creating work here and not having to import ideas, designs, designers and materials from abroad. I really hope this line kicks off and encourages other industries to follow pursuit.

Designed by Katrin Greiling during her residency at traffic, this line was created for the Bidoun Lounge at Art Dubai 2009 and inspired by the nomadic Arabs (Bedouins) and their furniture and lifestyle. The sofa system involves several mattresses stacked onto a base and fixed with cord. The cord comes from the same inspiration source - the Bedouin tent. It expresses the flexibility and mobility of the design.

Designed by Katrin Greiling during her residency at traffic, this line was created for the Bidoun Lounge at Art Dubai 2009 and inspired by the nomadic Arabs (Bedouins) and their furniture and lifestyle. This low coffee table incorporates rough cord, whimsically alluding to the modular aspects of the Bidoun design.

Designed by American media artist James Clar, these bookshelves incorporate neon lighting between reflective glass. The word “PRINT” repeats into infinity, alluding to how printed books can and have been replicated for generations.

Designed by Lebanese architect Fadi Sarieddine, winner of The Traffic Design Competition Vol. 1, ‘Dubai Syndrome’ uses concrete and metal bars to create an unforgiving outdoor chair. The uncompromising design is a direct statement on our post-industrial times.
