Cinema Akil - Where We Dwell film screenings in December

Cinema Akil's Where We Dwell screenings at A4 Space in Alserkal Avenue continues this month with two documentaries and one film, a classic from Senegal, Black Girl by Ousmane Sembene.  

Here's the line up for December: 

3rd and 4th December at 7pm

The Homestretch

Anne de Mare, Kirsten Kelly (2014)

This documentary film follows three homeless teens – Roque, Kasey and Anthony as they brave Chicago winters, pressures of high school and street life to build a brighter future.

As their stories unfold we connect with larger issues of poverty, race, juvenile justice, immigration, foster care and human rights.

The film follows these kids as they go through high school with daily struggles of couch hopping, emergency shelters, street families and a school system on the front lines of this crisis.

9th, 10th, 11th December at 7pm

Eames: The Architect and the Painter

The husband-and-wife team of Charles and Ray Eames were America’s most influential and important industrial designers. Admired for their creations and fascinating as individuals, they have risen to iconic status in American culture.

Eames: The Architect and the Painter draws from a treasure trove of archival material, as well as new interviews with friends, colleagues, and experts to capture the personal story of Charles and Ray while placing them firmly in the context of their fascinating times.

16th, 17th, 18th December at 7pm

Black Girl 

Ousmane Sembene (1966) 

65’ | French | France, Senegal | Drama | G 

A Senegalese woman is eager to find a better life abroad. She takes a job as a governess for a French family, but finds her duties reduced to those of a maid after the family moves from Dakar to the south of France.

In her new country, the woman is constantly made aware of her race and mistreated by her employers. Her hope for better times turns to disillusionment and she falls into isolation and despair. The harsh treatment leads her to consider suicide the only way out.
