A helping hand

Photos from 7 DaysThis post is a call for help to anyone reading this and living in the United Arab Emirates. 7 Days reported a few days ago that 400 labourers have been abandoned by their employer because it's gone out of business. The labourers who have not been paid for many months now have money to feed themselves, send money to their families back home and are struggling to survive.

There are a few ways we can help, so please read on and hope you can donate whatever you can.

AMOR - A Magazine of Random

AMOR (A Magazine of Random) is a new limited edition experimental magazine that celebrates creativity. Published on a quarterly basis, the first issue is out this month and features five people from the art scene in Dubai sharing their lives and what they do best.

Published by Fn (art in Arabic) a Dubai based design studio (they recently organised the FAKiE exhibition), I'm really glad to see they've launched this magazine. I'm a magazine junkie and hate hearing things like "print is dead". So if you feel the same, I urge you to show some support and buy yourself a copy.

Fashion themed movie screenings at Shelter in June

The hot summer months are upon us, which means less outdoor activities and more staying indoors. To beat the summer blues we normally experience in the UAE, Shelter will be screening movies every Tuesday for a month, starting from 1st June.

Curated by Tima Ouzden, a fashion designer, stylist and a writer, she's put together fashion themed selection of movies, that includes movies about fashion designers and the fashion industry, but also movies where there is a strong sense of fashion statement in them.

If you are tired of going to the mall or just tired of the summer blockbusters playing in our cinemas, Shelter will be a good alternative. The full list of movies and trailers are added below.

Here's something to violate while you're at it by Ubik

The fabulously titled "Here's something to violate while you're at it" is a new solo exhibition by Ubik which opens on 8th April and will run till 22nd April at Shelter, Dubai.

Inspired by the idea of people's innermost "spaces", Ubik has put together a show that explores our most intimate secrets.

'I tried to capture that sense of space inside us, that compartmentalized place kept hidden even from even our dearest relations, that place that actually defines who we are'. Ubik

On Tuesday, 26th January, Shelter will host a talk with Mishaal Gergawi, an Emirati commentator on socio-economic and cultural affairs in the UAE.
