This Is My Home

This Is My Home is a short film by Kelsey Holtaway and Mark Cersosimo from Departure | Arrival Films. It's a delightful film about Anthony Pisano and his home that is full of items he's bought/collected from his travels over a span of 32 years. At first glance, it looks like a vintage shop, but after meeting Anthony Pisano, you realise it's his home.

On an unseasonably warm November night in Manhattan on our way to get ice cream, we stumbled upon what appeared to be a vintage shop, brightly lit display window and all. As we began to walk in, a man sitting out front warned us that we were welcome to explore, but nothing inside was for sale. Our interests piqued, we began to browse through the collections the man out front had built throughout his life. This is a story of a man and his home.

There are some great lines and stories in this short film, but this is my favourite quote from it,

A lot of senior citizens feel that they've been discarded, but  when people stop in front of my place they bring life to me because they're recognising me in a sense. That "Wow, what is this place" and they'll stop.

A lot of people pass, they have these earphones on they'll see me but they'll just go by. They never question. As if people are afraid to talk one on one and that doesn't give me any satisfaction as far life is concerned.

Life is you talk with people, you touch them in a sense.

Here's the film. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Twin Tower Cameos by Dan Meth

Twin Tower Cameos
is a video edited by Dan Meth, a cartoonist and director from New York City.  It shows the iconic towers in movies over a span of three decades.

Ten years ago, New York's skyline changed drastically in a few minutes. Over the past few days leading to today's 10 year anniversary of 9/11 there have been many analysis, recounting and remembering.

I won't get into any of that here. Instead, I invite you to watch this wonderful ode to the Twin Towers.

From 1969 to 2001, the Twin Towers made countless cameos in Hollywood films. Sometimes featured prominently in the foreground, sometimes lurking in the distance. This montage celebrates the towers' all-too-short film career with songs that capture the passing decades. Man, I miss them.  Dan Meth

Irene NYC

It was bound to happen, here's a hauntingly beautiful video documenting Hurricane Irene in New York by Buffalo Picture House.

Our own Brandon Roots and Felix Thompson hopped out during the storm last Sunday to document Irene. Drenched to the bone but not much worse, they came back with this lovely little video. They wanted to make something that was very different than what people were seeing on the news. We think they succeeded…

Film Screening - Empire II

In 1964, Andy Warhol and Jonas Mekas made Empire, a silent black and white film that lacks a traditional narrative or characters. The passage from daylight to darkness is the film's only plot in this 8 hours and 5 minutes long film - with the protagonist played by the iconic building that was the tallest in New York City and the world, The Empire State Building.

Fast forward to 2010, a sequel an homage, Empire II was made by David Payton, Lohra Ydna and Andre Orione. Filmed on July 27th, 2010 from 6.35pm till 12.02am, this version is in colour and with sound, but just like the 1964 film, its only narrative is the tracking of time from daylight to night fall and starring today's world tallest building, Burj Khalifa in Dubai.

Empire II will be screened on Monday 4th July at The Pavilion Downtown Dubai’s cinema and will continue to be screened everyday (except on evenings when other films are scheduled to be screened) throughout the month July between 6.35pm and 12.02am (the same hours it was filmed).

The screening is organised by Brusselssprout*, a curatorial magazine on emergent art published from Dubai that aims to become an open, independent and alternative platform offering free content related to the artistic and cultural world. Brusselssprout's Editor-in-Chief Ignacio Gomez and filmmaker Camille Mallat will introduce the film and Empire II.

So much has changed since 1964 and I am curious to know why Empire II was made, its relevance to today's audience and what could this film mean in the future. I am also curious to see if there will be anyone interested to sit through the entire film. I doubt I will sit through the whole thing.

The original Empire was recently screened at the Andy Warhol: Motion Pictures exhibiton in MoMA that ran from 19th December 2010 till 21st March 2011. Listen to this interview with Jonas Mekas who recalls the making of Empire with Andy Warhol and talks about the planning of the shoot, the set up, the premiere screening and the response they got. He ends by saying,

Don't expect anthing from it. Just relax and permit it to come into your eyes and just look at it with no expectations. Then you will enjoy it.

Manhattan in Motion by Josh Owens

Looks like it's time-lapse week for me. Last night, I stumbled upon this beautifully edited time-lapse video by Josh Owens aka Mindrelic. Shot from several hotel rooftops (you can find the full list of hotels here), Owens "spent a little over a month hotel hopping in Manhattan (March 12th to April 29th) shooting time lapse, these clips were pulled from over an hours worth of footage."

As for the music, it's called Lights Dim, from a New York based band called The American Dollar. (You can download a free compilation of 9 of their best tracks here.

Louis Vuitton - City Guides

I recently posted a Louis Vuitton commercial which made me want to pack my un-Louis Vuitton looking suitcase and go on an adventure. Well, I am in Paris this week for Paris Photo and really enjoying a proper winter break. Coming from Dubai and it's almost never ending summer, I've embraced this cold season with open arms. I am also drinking lots of great coffee and hot chocolate and eating lots of yummy desserts.

Which brings me to why I have yet another Louis Vuitton related post. The latest edition of the Louis Vuitton City Guides was released recently. The guides cover the best in food, art, design and fashion in several of the world's most exciting cities. In addition to the guide books, the following videos were also created to support this latest launch. The videos feature Paris, Berlin and New York, each one exploring a unique aspect of the city. Each one is beautifully filmed and I hope more cities will be covered.

I will try to get my hands on the Paris City Guide soon and hope it leads me to new discoveries in this lovely city.

The Sandpit by Sam O'Hare

I'm used to hearing people referring to Dubai as a sandpit, so I was surprised to see this video about New York by Sam O'Hare called The Sandpit.

It is a lovely tilt shift video of a day in the life of New York and I am also loving the music, made specifically for this video by Human
