Mahmovies! Delian Mode and The Man With a Movie Camera

Delian Mode (Kara Blake, 2009)
Duration: 25 mins

This is a documentary about Delia Derbyshire who created theme song for 'Doctor Who'. Not only did this musical pioneer create this unforgettable theme, she created every sound it comprised. This experimental short film is a collage of sound and image created in the spirit of Derbyshire’s unique approach to audio creation and manipulation and illuminates such soundscapes onscreen while paying tribute to a woman whose work has influenced electronic musicians for decades. It recently won Best Short Documentary at Hot Docs. (If you are too young to remember the original Dr Who series and the music, listen to it here.)

Art Nights at the Gate Village

A new monthly night (every last Wednesday of the month) called Art Night will launch this week the Gate Village in Dubai International Finance Centre.

The Gate Village is a great space with a selection of very good art galleries, boutiques, restaurants and cafes, so I'm glad to see this monthly social evening is happening, where the galleries will stay open till late alongside special events per month like movie screenings, live art and fashion shows.

A documentary that delves into remix culture and copyright in the information age - with blurred lines between users and producers today, watch this documentary to hear the arguments whether it's a case of culture building upon culture, copyright infringement or a compromise of creative integrity.

The screening will be followed with a live performance by The Lost Fingers, a gypsy jazz trio from Quebec, Canada known for their unique interpretations of 1980s classics from “Billie Jean” to “Pump Up the Jam”.

A party for a very tall building

On 4th Jan, almost all of Dubai and most of the world watched the opening ceremony of Burj Dubai (renamed that same evening to Burj Khalifa).

Luckily, I was in the right place at the right time and ended up on the new park at the base of the Burj. It was where the VIPs and invited guests were seated, but they also let other people in, mostly residents from the neighbourhood, one of whom I was accompanying. So after we got in we found beanbags to sit on, made ourselves comfortable and waited for the party to start. I felt like we had the best seats in the house.

A Key is a Key - live at The Fridge 6th Jan

An indie Danish group called A Key is a Key will be performing at The Fridge on 6th Jan. I have not heard of them before, but I looked up their music and I think it will be a good small gig. Also seeing the event poster with the band members dressed in lederhosens gives me the impression they will be a good laugh as well.
